AI Shortlist · Edition 1, 2027 travel year
How the AI Shortlist is measured
How we asked
Each answer is a fresh conversation: one travel question, sent to one AI model, with web search on or off. Every model got the same short instructions: the traveler lives in the United States, and the answer should be a ranked list of up to 15 places, each with a one-line reason. The questions, the models and their settings were fixed before we started asking.
The models
| Model | Platform |
|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5 | Claude |
| Claude Sonnet 5 | Claude |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | Claude |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | ChatGPT |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | ChatGPT |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | Gemini |
| Grok 4.6 | Grok |
Answers were collected in September 2026. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok here mean each company's models as tested in this study, not the consumer apps, which can answer differently.
The questions
All 59 questions we asked, grouped by what they ask about. Some name a season, a trip length, a way of getting there, the weather, a style of trip or who is going; one names nothing at all. The plainest question was asked several times, to see how steady the answers are.

How the scores work
- A destination's score is the share of answers that recommend it in their top 10. An answer counts a destination once, however many times it names it.
- Scores are averaged model by model, then platform by platform, so each platform counts equally. A model with no answers in a filtered view is left out of that view's average, not counted as zero.
- The rank-weighted score gives position 1 full weight, sliding down to one tenth at position 10. The depth score counts only positions 11–15. The avoid score is the share of answers that tell the traveler to skip the destination.
- Every answer counts toward the total, including answers that asked a clarifying question or recommended nothing.
- Destinations come in three kinds: countries, US states and US regions. Wherever a US region appears beside countries, it is labelled as a US region.
What came back
Every answer counts toward the totals, whatever it contained.
Recommendation lists, 1,764 answers
- Answered in full: 1,741
- Answered with fewer places than asked for: 19
- Asked a clarifying question instead: 3
- Recommended nothing: 1
Reading the answers
Each answer was read for the places it named, whether it recommended each one or advised against it, and the sources it cited.
We checked 60 answers by hand. None had a place missed, invented, matched to the wrong destination, or a recommendation read the wrong way.
Keep in mind
- These figures are shares of AI answers, not shares of travelers who saw a destination.
- Every question assumed a traveler who lives in the United States.
- AI answers change as models and the web change; a later edition may differ.
