Where AI tells travelers to go in 2027

We asked 7 AI models

Questions the panel was asked include: Where should I go in 2027? Where should I go in winter 2027? Where should I go in 2027 for warm weather? Where should I go in 2027 that feels exotic? Where should I go in 2027 for culture and history? Where should we go for our honeymoon in 2027? Where should I take my family in 2027? Where should I fly with my family for a cultural two-week trip in winter 2027 with warm weather? What are the most underrated places to visit in 2027?

We put 59 travel questions like these to 7 AI models from the makers of Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok, with web search on and off, and collected 1,764 ranked lists of up to 15 places. This is who they recommend, and how the question changes the answer.

What the models recommended for 2027

The list, as models wrote it

Across 1,764 answers, Portugal made the top ten in 40.3% of recommendation lists, ahead of Japan (38.1%) and Spain (37.1%). The score is the share of answers that recommend a destination in their top ten, averaged model by model and then platform by platform, so each platform counts equally.

Among countries the leader is Portugal at 40.3%. Among US states it is California, USA at 27.6%. Among US regions it is Great Smoky Mountains, USA at 1.7%. Wherever a US region appears beside countries, it is labelled as a US region.

Of 1,764 answers, 1,741 gave the full list of fifteen places, 19 gave fewer, 3 asked a clarifying question instead, and 1 recommended nothing. Every one of them counts toward the totals the scores are based on.

How we did it

We asked AI models real travel questions, the way a person would type them, and read every answer. Four steps:

  1. Step 1Ask59 questionsShort questions, the way a traveler would type them. Some name a season, a trip length, who is going, a style, the weather or how to get there; one names nothing at all. Every model was told the traveler lives in the United States.
  2. Step 2Answer7 modelsThe models behind Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok, each asked every question with web search on and with it off. Answers collected in September 2026.
  3. Step 3Read1,764 listsEach answer is a ranked list of up to 15 places. We noted every place, its country or US state, and whether the model recommended it or warned against it. We checked 60 answers by hand and found no wrong, missed or invented destination.
  4. Step 4ScoreTop 10A destination’s score is the share of answers that put it in their top ten. Each model counts equally within its platform, and each platform counts equally overall.

Keep in mind

  • These scores measure how often AI recommends a place, not how many travelers saw that recommendation.
  • ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok here mean each company's models as tested in this study, not the consumer apps, which can answer differently.
  • Every question assumed a traveler who lives in the United States. Travelers elsewhere would get other lists.
  • The answers were collected in September 2026. AI answers change as models and the web change, so a later edition may differ.
