AI Itinerary Share · Edition 1, 2027 travel year

How AI Itinerary Share is measured

How we asked

Each answer is a fresh conversation: one travel question, sent to one AI model, with web search on or off. Every model got the same short instructions: the traveler lives in the United States, and the answer should be a ranked list of up to 15 places, each with a one-line reason. The questions, the models and their settings were fixed before we started asking.

For the itineraries, the same models planned day-by-day trips inside each destination, with and without a car, at several trip lengths, with web search off.

The models

ModelPlatform
Claude Opus 5Claude
Claude Sonnet 5Claude
Claude Haiku 4.5Claude
GPT-5.6 TerraChatGPT
GPT-5.6 LunaChatGPT
Gemini 3.8 FlashGemini
Grok 4.6Grok

Answers were collected in September 2026. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok here mean each company's models as tested in this study, not the consumer apps, which can answer differently.

The questions

All 59 questions we asked, grouped by what they ask about. Some name a season, a trip length, a way of getting there, the weather, a style of trip or who is going; one names nothing at all. The plainest question was asked several times, to see how steady the answers are.

How the scores work

  • Night share is the share of a trip's nights that a city or town gets, counted across every itinerary for one destination at one trip length.
  • Trip lengths are never combined. 7-day trips are the headline figure; 3, 10, 14 and 21-day trips are shown separately.
  • Day-stop share covers places an itinerary visits during the day without staying the night.
  • Place names are matched before counting, so spellings such as NYC and New York City count as one place.
  • Each platform counts equally, and each model counts equally within its platform.
  • A night is outside the destination when it is spent in another country, or in another US state.

What came back

Every answer counts toward the totals, whatever it contained.

Trip itineraries, 1,750 answers

  • Answered in full: 1,750

Reading the answers

Each itinerary was read night by night for where the traveler sleeps and what they visit.

Place names

Models spell places differently, so “Lisboa” and “Lisbon” count as one place.

Nights outside the destination

A night counts as outside when it is spent in a country, or US state, other than the destination. 16 of 1,750 itineraries spent at least one night outside their destination; each destination's figures show its share.

Keep in mind

  • These figures are shares of AI answers, not shares of travelers who saw a destination.
  • Every question assumed a traveler who lives in the United States.
  • AI answers change as models and the web change; a later edition may differ.
